Sgt Rock is gonna help me…

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Alan and I will be doing an Interview with our friends at BIZARRE magazine soon..so just doing some doodles..

I was listening to XTC.. and dressed TG accordingly.

Sgt Rock being one of my favourite songs, and comics.. Joe Kubert is such a huge influence.. in both his art, work ethic, and just as a gentleman.. He embodies all I love about others.

My Dad used to buy me Sgt Rock comics when I was little.. I remember him buying some from a PX in Tokyo..I was so happy. Thanks Dad. x x x

Right…enough gushing..I’d better get back to work..

Move out Easy Co. ..There’s a war on!

ALAN’S SATURDAY POP SLOT #29 – REALLY FREE by JOHN OTWAY & WILD WILLY BARRATT

Monday, April 27th, 2009

From TOTP in 1977, Otway and Barratt befuddle the studio audience. Check out Barratt’s mashed up electric guitar. also worth checking out is the Whistle Test performance where Otway falls off his amp and fucks up his ankle. Really free.

GAS #1

Jamie will probably strangle me for putting this up, but here it is anyway…

From the March 1988 issue of Emap’s “Commodore User” computer magazine, Jamie’s first paid, professional gig – “Groovy Arcade Stories”. I’m posting this, not just because it’s embarassing to Jamie, but also because it shows the lead up (style-wise) to the first Tank Girl strip later that year. Also, as the story progresses, a character appears who bears a marked resemblance to our heroine.
So here’s episode one, enjoy…

(sorry to have to stack the pages one on top of another – as some of the panels run across the gutter in the middle – but it was the only way to display them at any decent size. If you’re having trouble viewing them, try saving and opening with your usual image software).

And here’s Jamie’s first ever professional cover, from September 1988, featuring, of course, everyone’s favourite decathlete Daley Thompson -

ALAN’S SATURDAY POP SLOT #28 – PAPERBACK WRITER and RAIN by THE BEATLES

Monday, April 20th, 2009

Two clips made back to back in the gardens of Chiswick House for The Ed Sullivan tv show. The Beatles would always do a spot for Ed when they were touring the States. With touring now no longer happening, the Fabs came up with these precursors to the standard MTV pop promo.

Both songs have always been big favourites, The Beatles really do seem to be at the top of their songwriting game – they were knocking stuff like this out at a thousand miles an hour. I love the bit half way through PaperbackWriter where they throw in Frere Jacques as a backing vocal. Sublimey…

“YA WANT SOME OF THIS YA SCREW HEAD!!?”

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

I’ve just acquired copies of a 1988/89 comic strip from computer magazine Commodore User called GROOVY ARCADE STORIES, drawn by one Jamie C. Hewlett. My plan is to serialise these on the blog and also show chunks of the other artwork and covers that Jamie and Philip Bond did for CU.

ALAN’S SATURDAY POP SLOT #27 – TREAT HER RIGHT by TOM JONES

Friday, April 10th, 2009

From his own THIS IS TOM JONES show of 1968. I had to post this, not because I’m a huge Jones fan, or I like the song (although both have their merits), BUT because at 1:20 into the clip TOM JONES DANCES LIKE HELL! Stay with it, it really is worth the wait…

I think he’s trying to prove to the entire (female) audience that he’s got enough energy to shag all of them.

Happy (is it meant to be happy?) Easter

ALAN’S SATURDAY POP SLOT #26 – KISS by AGE OF CHANCE

Monday, April 6th, 2009

Believe it or not, Age Of Chance were another big influence on the original look (and graphic style) of Tank Girl, it was all in there, in the mix.

You don’t have to be Prince if you want to dance

You’ve just got to get down with The Age Of Chance
