ALAN’S SATURDAY POP SLOT #37 – EBENEEZER GOODE by THE SHAMEN
Saturday, December 19th, 2009I’ve been on about this one for years – how comes Ebeneezer Goode, a massive festive hit from 1992, has never been included on a Christmas compilation? I was gutted when I bought Now That’s What I Call Xmas to find that it had been excluded.
Happy Christmas
Peace and Joy

TANK GIRL : DARK NUGGETS – OUT NOW!!!!!!!
Tuesday, December 8th, 2009Just got a box of comp copies of our new one-shot comic from Image – Dark Nuggets. And guess what? It’s lovely!

Reviews are starting to appear on the interweb, so my guess is that it’s out this week (weds 9th Dec, probably).
It’s a bumper package, with three Tank Girl stories, one Booga story, and a double-sided pull-out poster! All in glorious b/w, just like it used to be. All for less than the price of a pint of fizzy beer. A perfect Christmas stocking filler for the discerning TG fanatic.
Here’s a review from Trash Cookies (http://trashcookies.com/?p=519)

Tank Girl: Dark Nuggets One-Shot (Image Comics)
Writer: Alan Martin, Artist: Rufus Dayglo
I was reading Tank Girl comics long before I was reading comics. Way back then, I though the incredible team of Jamie Hewlett and Alan Martin were an anomaly, that Tank Girl was one-of-a-kind. Well, hundreds of comics later, I still feel the same about my punky little princess. I’ve read nearly everything Tank Girl. Hell, I even shaved my head for a few years, leaving only a few tufts behind in homage to my animated role-model. For years, I read crappy versions of TG, written by crap heads that couldn’t tell a tank from a hole in their butt, in an attempt to recapture that feelings of joy and violence. But alas, no one could write the way Martin did. But guess what, my post-apocalyptic friends? Martin is back and writing as witty as ever. With Rufus Dayglo penning the magic, there is no stopping this train…er, tank. The duo has honed their skills over the past year, that is to say… Martin has coached Dayglo on the art of being less of a Hewlett copycat, and Dark Nuggets is a perfect example of why you should be reading this comic. If you love tanks and poop and nonsense, you will love Tank Girl.
Buy one for all of the family!

ALAN’S SATURDAY POP SLOT #35 – MIDGET SUBMARINES by SWELL MAPS
Saturday, September 5th, 2009The band that inspired me to do everything I’ve ever done. The very wonderful Swell Maps. If you haven’t got them already, get Trip To Marineville and Jane From Occupied Europe (vinyl is best).

ALAN’S SATURDAY POP SLOT #33 – GIMME SOME TRUTH by JOHN LENNON
Saturday, May 30th, 2009From the 1971 album Imagine. I didn’t discover this song until it resurfaced on the b-side of the postumous single release of the song Love in 1982, then I wore the grooves off the record. George Harrison on Guitar, Klaus Voormann on bass.
If you haven’t heard the track in full, it’s well worth seeking out.
Peace

ALAN’S SATURDAY POP SLOT #33 – SLEEPING GAS by JULIAN COPE
Saturday, May 23rd, 2009The Arch Drude in 1988 giving us a busker’s rendition the old Teardrop Explodes’ classic Sleeping Gas on Mathew Street in Liverpool, a stone’s throw from the infamous Eric’s club, where it was first performed. I’ve just re-read Cope’s Head On book, which I first read in the mid-ninties, I’d forgotten what an absolute luntatic he is, and how much I love him.
So I’m also belatedly digging last year’s double cd Black Sheep

GAS #1
Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009Jamie will probably strangle me for putting this up, but here it is anyway…
From the March 1988 issue of Emap’s “Commodore User” computer magazine, Jamie’s first paid, professional gig – “Groovy Arcade Stories”. I’m posting this, not just because it’s embarassing to Jamie, but also because it shows the lead up (style-wise) to the first Tank Girl strip later that year. Also, as the story progresses, a character appears who bears a marked resemblance to our heroine.
So here’s episode one, enjoy…

(sorry to have to stack the pages one on top of another – as some of the panels run across the gutter in the middle – but it was the only way to display them at any decent size. If you’re having trouble viewing them, try saving and opening with your usual image software).

And here’s Jamie’s first ever professional cover, from September 1988, featuring, of course, everyone’s favourite decathlete Daley Thompson -

Stay tuned for episode #2
